Salmon Cakes with Kefir aioli

Salmon Cakes with Kefir Aioli & Why Dating After 40 Is a Superpower

If you had told me 10 years ago that I’d be making high protein salmon cakes while reflecting on dating in my 40s, I’d probably have laughed. But here I am, thriving, evolving, and sneaking Lifeway Kefir into everything I possibly can—including this zesty, protein-packed aioli. This recipe has become one of my go-to summer staples, and it just so happens to pair perfectly with some real talk about love and life after 40.

Dating After 40: A Liability? No, It’s Your Superpower.

We’ll get to the salmon cakes, I promise. But first, let’s get this straight—dating in your 40s isn’t a setback, it’s a glow-up. Why? Because by now, we know who we are. We know what we want. And more importantly, we know what we won’t tolerate. There’s no time for games, mixed signals, or confusion.

One of the first and most important conversations you should have in your 40s is: “Where do we stand on kids?” Do you have them? Want them? Does he? It might not sound sexy, but clarity is everything. There are fewer years to waste and so much more wisdom to bring to the table.

Especially after going through deep personal loss, I learned very quickly that settling is no longer an option. You need someone who cherishes you—not just loves you, not just likes you, but truly honors who you are.

Let’s Talk Salmon Cakes

I love a meal that comes together fast but still feels intentional and nourishing. These salmon cakes are crispy, savory, and protein-packed. They’re also a great way to incorporate omega-3s and clean protein into your diet. And the star here? A probiotic kefir aioli that adds tang, balance, and gut-loving benefits.

Salmon Cakes (Makes 4–6 Patties)

  • 2 (6 oz) cans wild salmon, drained and flaked
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup seasoned panko breadcrumbs (or try 1/3 cup if mixture feels too loose)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tsp Dijon mustard or 1 tbsp mayo for added binding
  • Avocado or olive oil, for pan-frying

Instructions:

  1. Mix salmon, egg, breadcrumbs, and seasoning in a bowl. If the mixture is crumbly, add a touch more breadcrumbs or a spoonful of mayo.
  2. Form into 4–6 patties.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for about 4 minutes per side, or until golden and cooked through.
  4. Set aside and let cool slightly before serving with the aioli.

Kefir Aioli

  • 1/3 cup Lifeway Kefir (plain)
  • 2 tbsp mayo
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1 handful fresh basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Blend all ingredients until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  2. Serve over warm salmon cakes or as a dip on the side.

Why Kefir?

Not only do I drink a glass of Lifeway Kefir daily for its probiotics and protein, but I love incorporating it into recipes. It adds a delicious tang and depth to sauces and dressings, while also boosting your gut health. The kefir aioli in this recipe is cool, creamy, and balances the richness of the salmon perfectly.

Whether you’re reinventing your diet, your love life, or both, let this be your reminder: it’s never too late to start over, level up, and treat yourself to something nourishing.

Here’s to strong women, good food, and even better gut health.
